The Placenta Blog

Since my interest in placentophagy was awakened I have heard/read various stories of how the placenta is a recognized remedy in other countries. The idea of both men and women in other countries ingesting placenta as a common remedy has intrigued me. So, when I came across the article titled [...]

The Feminist Breeder is a popular writer and “mommy blogger” who just had her third baby. This time around, she decided to join the growing ranks of mothers who are using placenta capsules for their postpartum recovery. Why?
Well, these are my good reasons:

I’m choosing a med-free water birth in my living room because the safety record of [...]

This is a wonderful video demonstrating maternal placentophagy among apes. Apparently, this is the very first video footage of a Javan gibbon birth — complete with maternal placentophagy! You can clearly see the gibbon mom licking placental fluids and eating the placenta.

I’ve thought quite often over the years about the connection of the placenta to tree lore and mythology. So many cultures across the Earth have a ritual connecting the placenta to trees. I’ve written a chapter on this in my upcoming book, The Postpartum Survival Guide, and wanted to share a little excerpt here.

Not Your Typical Art Project

March 14th, 2011

The placenta is an amazing thing, we all know this if we’ve spent any time reading this blog.  It is obviously essential for our babies existence and is extremely beneficial for a mother’s postpartum healing.  But what else can that wonderful placenta provide?  I am now reminded of the classic kid’s book by Shel Silverstein, “The Giving Tree”.  [...]

I thought this poem was very interesting, and wanted to share it here.
THE PLACENTA HEART CLUB
The placenta of my womb
never gave me enough,
despite all my pleading.
So my heart did not develop
and at birth–in a frantic attempt
to save me–
lacking any better

Placenta and Cultural Beliefs

November 7th, 2008

This is an article I wrote discussing various beliefs and rituals for the placenta. It’s amazing to me that Western societies have such an extremely UNfavorable view of the placenta, when around the world it is respected and honored. The more we learn, the more we can make changes.
Cultures around the world have a variety [...]

I was contacted recently by a woman on the East coast with a sad story. Her midwife had told her that the placenta would be beneficial for her postpartum recovery, yet did not send her to PlacentaBenefits.info for more information, or tell her much about it. She was told to just put the placenta out [...]

Hypnobirthing

November 27th, 2007

Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of expectant parents, who were going through a childbirth education course offered by Hypnobirthing Las Vegas. It was the final class of a 5-week course, and the topic was postpartum. Among many other topics discussed by the fabulous facilitator (and doula) Sherry Hopkins was a [...]
