April Kermani, the Certified Nurse Midwife who recently lost her privileges at St. Rose De Lima hospital in Henderson, has given up her nursing license and is now attending home births. This is fabulous news for Las Vegas area women, since April brings an immense amount of knowledge to her practice, as well as a personal passion.
In April’s own words: “I posted a few months ago about the unfortunate news that I was no longer able to attend births at St. Rose Hospital. Well, that bump in the road turned out to be a pivotal moment in my life. I decided to follow my heart and open a home birth practice, Baby’s 1st Day – Midwifery Services (www.hendersonmidwife.com).
I have always felt the calling to home birth midwifery and knew that when I had my own babies I would birth at home. With all my formal education I simply felt tied to the hospital. Baby’s 1st Day just had its first baby yesterday and I am just beaming with joy over my choice to switch from a hospital birth to home birth practice!
With my 10 years of hospital experience I can say with confidence this mama would never have been `allowed’ to have this baby vaginally in the hospital. For starters she was 42 weeks and 1 day pregnant. She also took 7 hours to get from 7cm dilated to 10cm dilated. Thankfully for her she pushed her 9 pound baby out in only 20 minutes with no tearing, yahoo!!
The blessings have been pouring in since I made the choice to listen to my heart. I just wanted to share the good news with you all. ”
Thank you for continuing to support birthing women, April.

Well, as happy as I am that she’s found the right niche for herself, I can’t help but feel VERY sad for me. LOL. Literally almost in tears
I had a pregnancy back in 2006 and I found April through searching online. Went to her when she was with Deseret and although that pregnancy resulted in my third miscarriage, I found her witty, intelligent, and willing to listen- that third part doesn’t occur often in the world of OBs and hospitals.
So this past Friday, I find out- woah- I’m pregnant again and I’m pleased because at least I have someone WONDERFUL lined up and I call that office- she’s no longer practicing with them as of December 1st.
Dealing with a pregnancy that may or may not last without the support I had last time around- I’m just not so sure I’m up to this.
Please, if anyone has any recommendations to send my way- please let me know. I’d prefer someone like April with hospital priveleges- but I bet there is nobody left in this valley :S

Trish,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope that you have a very healthy, easy pregnancy this time around. I really hope you are able to find another care provider that will help and listen to you. I have, unfortunately, found that midwives are truly the best in that area. You should join the Diva/Mamas group, too: http://www.diva-mamas.com. It’s a great resource and I’m sure one of the fabulous women on there would be able to give you a recommendation. April Kermani is on the list too!
Happy Holidays!
Blessings,
Jodi Selander
